I’m Dan. I’ve been DJing since 1994 — clubs, venues, and events across the UK and internationally. Over three decades, I’ve played on almost every piece of equipment this industry has produced, watched the technology change beyond recognition, and formed strong opinions about what actually works and what’s just marketing.
The DJ Mixtape started in 2019 because I couldn’t find a resource that answered questions the way a knowledgeable DJ friend would — honestly, specifically, and without trying to sell you something you don’t need. Most gear reviews were either written by people who’d never played a serious gig, or commissioned by brands with an interest in the outcome. Neither was particularly useful.
What I’ve always had is an equal obsession with the music and the technology. I’m as interested in why a mixer sounds the way it does as I am in what’s playing through it. I spend more time than is probably healthy reading spec sheets, testing software, and comparing how different pieces of gear hold up in a real booth under real conditions. The DJ Mixtape is where I put that knowledge to use.
“If a product is mediocre, I say so. If something doesn’t deserve your money, I tell you. The goal has always been the same: a guide I’d want to read.”
The site is funded through affiliate commissions — when you buy something through a link on these pages, we earn a small percentage from the retailer. That pays for the writing and keeps the site independent. It doesn’t change what I recommend. I’d rather lose a commission than point someone towards something that isn’t right for them.
Seven years in, over 210 reviews and guides, and still the same principle: write what you’d actually want to read. If you’ve got a question, a product tip, or a disagreement — I’m at dan@thedjmixtape.com.
