The gig is in a garden. The nearest socket is in the kitchen, thirty metres away, behind a door people keep walking through. This is the situation battery PA exists for — and the one it’s worth understanding properly before you spend.
Outdoor and off-grid work has quietly become a bigger slice of paid DJing. Garden parties, marquees, beach events, festival side stages, pop-ups in spaces that were never wired for a PA. Every one of those is a booking where a cabled rig is either awkward or impossible, and where turning up with a solution nobody else has is worth real money.
Battery-powered PA has also got genuinely good in the last few years. It used to mean a compromise you apologised for. It doesn’t any more — but it still has hard limits, and the marketing is unusually loose even by PA standards. This guide covers what the category can actually do, how to read the claims, and which units are worth your attention.

What battery PA is actually for
Be honest with yourself about which of these you’re solving, because it changes what you buy:
- No power at all. Gardens, beaches, woodland, a field. Nothing to plug into. This is the real use case and the one worth paying for.
- Power exists but it’s a problem. One socket the caterers also need, or a cable run that crosses a walkway. Battery removes the argument.
- Speed. Cocktail hour in one room, dinner in another, dancing in a third. Picking up a speaker and walking it somewhere is faster than re-rigging.
- Ceremony and speeches. A single battery box at the front for vows or a toast, then folded away before the main system comes up.
What it is not for is replacing a proper mains PA on a normal indoor booking. You will pay significantly more for less output. Battery PA is a second system that unlocks work you’d otherwise turn down — not a first system that does everything.
The question to ask before buying
How many bookings did you turn down or bodge last year because of power? If the honest answer is none, this is a want rather than a need, and the money does more work in a better mains pair. If it’s three or more, a battery box pays for itself inside a season.
Reading the claims honestly
Two numbers get quoted constantly and both need translating.
Battery life
Manufacturers publish a maximum runtime figure, and it’s real — but it’s measured at low playback levels, which is not what a DJ does. Bose is unusually straightforward about this: they quote up to 11 hours for the S1 Pro+ at lower levels, while stating that performing indoors to an audience of around 100 people gives roughly five hours. That gap between headline and working figure is typical across the category.
Assume you’ll see somewhere between a third and a half of the quoted number at dance-floor volume. If a spec sheet says twelve hours, plan for four or five and you won’t be caught out. Anything running a full evening needs either a spare battery or a way to top up mid-gig.
Output
Ignore wattage entirely here — it’s even less meaningful on battery gear than it is on mains, because the amplifier can’t sustain peak draw for long anyway. The number that matters is maximum SPL in dB, and the useful comparison is against the low-frequency response figure.
Electro-Voice publishes both across its Everse range, which makes it a useful reference point: the Everse 8 is quoted at 121 dB maximum SPL with a low-frequency response of −3 dB at 60 Hz, while the larger Everse 12 is quoted at 126 dB and −3 dB at 55 Hz. Five decibels and five hertz doesn’t read like much on paper. In a room it’s the difference between background music and a dance floor.
The units worth knowing about
None of these carries a score. I haven’t run a season of gigs on any of them, and inventing a verdict I haven’t earned would be worse than useless to you. What follows is what each one is built to do, with the specifications as stated by the manufacturers — enough to work out which is worth your own demo.
The mobile-DJ default
Electro-Voice Everse 8

The unit that shows up most often when working mobile DJs talk about battery sound. Electro-Voice’s stated aim with the Everse range was a step up in sound quality for battery PA rather than another compromise box, and the specification reads that way: a 400-watt peak Class D Dynacord amplifier, two XLR combo inputs with phantom power on one, a four-channel onboard mixer with effects and master processing including compression, ducking and feedback management, plus app control over Bluetooth.
The four-channel mixer matters more than it sounds. It means the speaker is the rig for a ceremony or a cocktail hour — controller in, mic in, done, no separate mixer in the car.

The bigger sibling, and the honest answer if the battery box has to hold an actual dance floor rather than provide clean sound at conversational levels. Mackie Thump GO

Mackie’s battery entry in the long-running Thump line, and the value pick of the category. Both channels take mic or line level on combo sockets, the second adds a 3.5 mm input and Bluetooth streaming, and there are four voicing modes including an outdoor setting. Ducking and feedback suppression are built in, with app control for the rest.
Its real advantage is the matching ThumpSub GO. Battery subwoofers are rare, and the option to add low end later — rather than replacing the whole system — is the strongest argument for starting here if the budget is tight.

The most portable serious option, and the one that most often gets carried to gigs that don’t strictly need a PA. Two units link for stereo playback through the Bose app. Bose also offers mic and instrument RF transmitters that store and charge inside the speaker itself — genuinely useful for a ceremony where a trailing cable would be visible in every photograph.
It won’t hold a dance floor on its own. As a ceremony, speeches and cocktail-hour box that fits in a car boot alongside everything else, it’s hard to fault.

The distinguishing feature is the wireless mic receiver built into the speaker, which removes a whole box and a whole set of cables from a job where someone needs to talk. For ceremony work, announcements and small function rooms, that integration is worth more than a few decibels.

Worth watching purely because of who makes it. QSC’s mains boxes are what a lot of working engineers buy once and stop thinking about, and the K-series reputation for surviving years of vans and load-ins is the exact quality that matters most in a battery speaker. Newer to the category than the others here, so there’s less long-term field evidence — but the pedigree is real.

Going fully cable-free
Battery power removes the mains cable. It doesn’t remove the signal cable — you’ve still got an XLR run from the controller to the speaker, which is the thing people actually trip over.
Low-latency wireless audio closes that gap, and it’s becoming the second half of the off-grid story rather than a novelty. We’ve covered the standard in detail in SKAA wireless for DJs — the short version is that consumer Bluetooth is unusable for live performance because of latency, and the purpose-built standards are not.
Pair a battery speaker with genuine low-latency wireless and you have a rig you can carry to a spot, set down, and run with no cable of any kind. For beach sets, rooftops and anywhere the setup itself is part of what the client is paying for, that’s a distinct offer very few local DJs can make.
What else goes in the bag
- A spare battery, charged. On any unit that takes one. This is the single difference between a battery rig you trust and one you worry about all night.
- Stands, still. Battery doesn’t change physics — a speaker on the grass fires into people’s shins. Height matters more outdoors, not less.
- Something to weight the stands. Outdoors means wind. A sandbag or a weight plate per stand.
- Covers. Dew, damp grass, an unexpected shower. Battery gear lives outside by definition.
- A power bank for the controller. Easy to solve the speaker problem and forget that the laptop or standalone still needs feeding.

Common questions
Can a battery speaker handle a wedding?
Parts of one, comfortably — ceremony, drinks reception, speeches. For the dancing you want mains power and a bigger system. The realistic model is a battery box that covers the outdoor and roaming portions of the day, with your main PA rigged indoors for the evening.
How many people will one cover?
Outdoors, far fewer than the same speaker manages inside — there are no walls returning sound to you, so the low end simply disappears. Treat a single 8-inch battery box as a background-music and speech tool, a pair of 12-inch units as a small dance floor, and anything larger as needing a sub and probably mains.
Is a battery subwoofer worth it?
If your work is genuinely outdoors and bass-driven, yes — it’s the only way to get usable low end off-grid. They’re heavy and there aren’t many of them. Buying into a system that offers one later, rather than committing up front, is the lower-risk route.
Should I buy one or two?
One is a legitimate purchase here, which isn’t true of mains PA. A single battery box genuinely solves ceremony and speech work. Buy the second when you’re regularly asking it to cover a dance floor.
Can I run it while it charges?
Most units allow it, which effectively turns the speaker into a mains PA with a built-in UPS — useful in venues with unreliable power. Check the specific model, because the charging behaviour varies and some units charge more slowly while playing.
