SKAA wireless for DJs: the transmitters and speakers cutting the cables

A wave of battery-powered, cable-free PA gear is arriving built around one wireless standard most DJs have never heard of. Here’s what SKAA is, why you’ll need a transmitter, and the kit that runs on it.

If you’ve been looking at compact wireless speakers for small gigs — the Dillinger Death From Above among them — you’ll keep hitting four letters: SKAA. It’s not a brand and it’s not Bluetooth. It’s a wireless audio standard, and a small cluster of gear aimed squarely at mobile and small-venue DJs is now built on it. If cable-free is where your paid-gig rig is heading, it’s worth understanding the whole picture before you buy a single piece.

So what is SKAA?

SKAA is a wireless audio standard developed by Eleven Engineering — pitched explicitly as an alternative to Bluetooth for running actual sound rather than casual listening. The maker’s headline claims are the things Bluetooth tends to fall down on for a working setup: long range, low latency, and no network or pairing. Per SKAA, there’s no Wi-Fi dependency and no pairing dance — the receivers decide which transmitter to listen to, and you can feed multiple speakers at once.

There are two flavours worth knowing. Standard SKAA feeds more receivers but at higher latency; SKAA Pro runs at a stated 19 ms and supports up to two receivers — the low-latency mode that matters if you’re scratching or finger-drumming, where lag between the deck and the speaker is the whole ballgame. SKAA-enabled receivers switch between the two automatically.

The one thing to get straight first

SKAA is a two-part system: a transmitter that takes audio from your mixer, controller or phone, and one or more receivers — usually the speakers themselves. Some speakers have the receiver built in; the transmitter is almost always a separate box you buy on top. A SKAA speaker on its own is not a complete rig. Budget for both halves.

The transmitter: the piece you can’t skip

For a DJ, the transmitter question effectively has one main answer right now — the Dani SKAA Pro transmitter from Dillinger Labs. Here’s the useful part to understand: SKAA is one standard with several brands building on it — Dillinger Labs is itself a subsidiary of Eleven Engineering, and marine/pro-audio names have signed on as partners. So these aren’t really rival ecosystems; they’re different speakers that all speak the same wireless language and can, broadly, run off the same transmitter. That’s rare, and it’s the strongest argument for the format.

Electrotec Audio STAGE ONE

Dual hot-swap batteries · California-built

The outlier that hedges its bets: STAGE ONE runs SKAA and Bluetooth (BLE 5.3), so it’s less all-in on wireless-only than the DFA. Electrotec state a dual hot-swappable battery system for 100+ hours at moderate volume, a 3-way design, and the ability to bond up to five speakers. Founded by a veteran concert-audio producer, and it took a NAMM Best in Show nod — the most “big event” of the three.

Is it right for your rig?

SKAA solves a real problem — cables are the single most annoying part of setting up a small gig, and a standard built for audio rather than borrowed from headphones is a genuinely smart answer. The catch is the same one running through this whole piece: it’s a system, not a single purchase. You’re buying into transmitter-plus-speakers, and for a DJ that means one more box in the signal chain and one more battery to keep charged.

Weigh it honestly against a conventional powered speaker with a cable, which is cheaper, needs no transmitter, and never drops a wireless link. SKAA earns its place when the freedom from cabling is worth more to you than the simplicity — outdoor sets, tight rooms, quick-change setups, anywhere a trailing lead is a genuine nuisance. If that’s your world, start with the transmitter, pick the speaker that suits the gig, and build out from there.
