How to
Samples vs loops vs one-shots
Samples are raw recordings. Loops are repeating musical phrases designed to run in a cycle. One-shots are single hits โ drums, stabs, FX. For DJs making edits, one-shots and acapellas are most useful. For producers building tracks from scratch, all three.
Subscription vs buy outright
Splice’s credit model means you pay per sample โ flexible but costs mount. Loopmasters packs are one-off purchases you own permanently. If you download regularly, a subscription works out cheaper. If you buy specific genre packs occasionally, outright purchase is cleaner.
Royalty-free matters
Every sample from Splice, Loopmasters and Loopcloud is royalty-free โ you can use them in commercial releases without clearance. Samples from random free websites often aren’t. Always check the licence before using anything in a release or DJ mix you’re monetising.
Start with one plugin
Don’t buy a bundle of 50 plugins when you’re starting out. Learn one synth deeply before buying another. Serum is the best starting point โ it’s versatile, the tutorials are everywhere, and the preset library will keep you busy for months. Add plugins as you identify specific gaps.
Buy on sale
Plugin Boutique, Native Instruments and most plugin companies run regular sales โ Black Friday, January, summer. You can often get 50โ70% off major plugins by waiting. There’s almost never a reason to pay full price for a plugin. Sign up to Plugin Boutique’s newsletter for sale alerts.
Finding acapellas
Clean acapellas are harder to find than loops. Splice has a dedicated acapella section. Looperman has a huge free community acapella library. For commercial tracks, platforms like Acapellas4U and label-licensed services are the legitimate route โ avoid unofficial acapella sites.
